Prof. Bernabei is the Chair of the Department of Geriatrics, Neurosciences and Orthopaedics at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore UCSC of Rome and Professor of Internal Medicine. He is the president of the Italian Network for Research on Aging and Active Longevity (Italia LONGEVA), member of the Italian National Health Council 2016), the highest Italian health advisory committee to the Ministry of Health and the Parliament, executive board member of EAMA (European Academy for Medicine on Aging). He is past president of the Italian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology (SIGG; 2005-2007), past executive vice president of interRAI (1992-2010), former member of the Special Joint Commission (Italian Ministry of Health-Ministry of Labour) for disability in the older and related problems (2003-2005), former member of the Expert Committee of the Italian Drug Administration (AIFA; 2007- 2012), and Visiting Professor at Brown University School of Medicine (Providence, RI, USA), Department of Community Health.
Prof. Bernabei's main research interests are in comprehensive geriatric assessment, models of health services for older care, sarcopenia, frailty, and pharmacoepidemiology. He developed the SAGE database at Brown University together with Prof. Vince Mor. Prof. Bernabei has acted as the PI for the EU FP5 (ADHOC) and FP7 (SHELTER) as well as for numerous national and international clinical trials.
At present, Prof. Bernabei is leader of the Managing Entity of the Sprintt Project. This project has been funded by the IMI Innovative Medicines Initiative Agency and the ultimate goals of SPRINTT are to offer efficient treatment options to physically frail, sarcopenic older persons and to ameliorate their quality of life. This result will directly contribute to the long-term sustainability and efficiency of health- and social-care systems.
